Many clients assume rooftop landscaping is just regular gardening done higher up. It is not and the differences are important.
Load limits matter. At ground level, weight is not a concern. On a rooftop, every kilogram of soil, planter, plant, and hardscape material must sit within the building’s structural load capacity. We calculate this before any design work begins.
Waterproofing is non-negotiable. A rooftop garden sits directly above occupied floors. If waterproofing fails, the entire building below pays the price. Our projects always include a proper waterproofing membrane with drainage planning above it.
Wind and sun exposure is higher. Rooftops are more exposed than ground-level gardens. Plants need to be hardier, planters need to be secured, and any structures like pergolas need to be designed for wind load.
Soil is different. Standard garden soil is too heavy and drains too slowly for rooftop use. We use lightweight growing media specifically designed for elevated planting, lighter, better-draining, and more plant-friendly in rooftop conditions.
Irrigation cannot be skipped. Rooftop plants dry out faster than ground-level ones because they have less soil volume and more sun exposure. Automated irrigation is not optional on a well-built rooftop garden it is necessary for the garden to survive.
This is why rooftop and urban landscaping requires a specialist commercial landscaping contractor in India not a standard garden team.
